The Symphony Orchestra's bells, sponsored by the Friends, have been in frequent use, most recently three times during the final weeks of this season. At the last concert, the largest of the bells was featured at the end of Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the tenth movement, subtitled The Great Gate of Kiev.
As we all know, church bells have a very long reverberation, and this is especially true of the big bell. When the bells are in a church tower, it doesn't matter that it still rings for quite a while after the strike, but that's not the case in an orchestral context.
So 2nd solo janissary Jakob Weber Engholm had to have another member of the percussion group by his side when he struck the heavy club against the bell's interior. Together, the two literally threw their bodies over the bell to stop the grinding voice in time. With great and cheerful attention from the audience.
