Midwife for future Maestros<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week, the Symphony Orchestra is hosting the Malmo Competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has become a world event among young conductors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mikael Beier sits among his fellow musicians on stage in the Concert Hall and plays the flute. On Friday, he sat among the audience in the front row of the balcony with the title of Secretary General.<\/p>\n

It is he who is in charge of pulling together the many threads of the competition that from Sunday until the culmination on Friday this week will lead to the selection of three young conductors who will become the future maestros of the world's concert halls. All originated by a forward-thinking conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra more than 50 years ago. Continued by the members of the orchestra. This week, for the 18th time - there is a three-year gap between the organisation of the Malkoko competitions.<\/p>\n

When the orchestra's conductor Nikolai Malko, who was born in Ukraine and educated in St Petersburg, died in 1961, he was the permanent guest conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the highest sense of the word, he was something about music. He wrote textbooks on music, and the education of young musicians was close to his heart. Therefore, after his death, in co-operation with his widow, it was decided to create an award in his name.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

- At the first award ceremony in 1965, there were 76 applicants. This time there were 566,\" explains Mikael Beier, who has actively participated in the competition as Secretary General and previously also as a member of the jury. The last two times the event has been administered externally, but now the orchestra has taken back control. With a steering committee consisting of several musicians and leaders in the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and with Michael Beier as Secretary General.<\/p>\n

The symphony orchestra also has several members on the jury, including first solo violinist Teresa La Cour and bassoonist Dorte Bennike as well as the orchestra's director, Kim Bohr. But the jury is dominated by distinguished international names with the orchestra's chief conductor, Fabio Luisi, as jury chairman and includes a cellist from the Berlin Philharmonic, an early solo flutist from the \u201dWieners\u201d, the director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and his colleague from Oslo. And there's even a Danish lawyer, Per Magid, on board. His role is to make sure that everything goes smoothly when the winners are announced. Because there is a lot at stake in the literal sense of the word. Incidentally, Magid's predecessor in this job for many years was the former ombudsman Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen. It doesn't get any finer than that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The 1st prize consists of \u20ac20,000, but more importantly, having Chief Conductor Luisi as a personal mentor for three years, professional career counselling, a video production with the DR Symphony Orchestra AND concerts with 25 prestigious orchestras around the world. All orchestrated by DR musicians and their managers. Based on Malko's ideas about giving young musicians the maximum support in their careers. And all based in the Concert Hall in DR Byen. The 2nd prize is 15,000 Euros and the 3rd prize is 12,000 Euros.<\/p>\n

Preparing and organising such a competition is a huge task, and with 566 applicants from 17 countries, it is necessary to hire someone to take care of the preparations before the 24 lucky finalists from 17 countries across five continents can compete on the podium. Today, DR is - and has not always been - fully behind the project, but the competition would be impossible to organise without grants from several large Danish foundations.<\/p>\n

There are no Danish names among the finalists this time, and Mikael Beier believes that this may be due to the fact that the Music Conservatory does not have a conducting programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The whole event is dependent on the quality of the participants and the organisation of the hectic week that ends on Friday with the announcement of the three winners.<\/p>\n

Mikael Beier recalls the competition years ago with conductor Lorin Mazel at the helm, where the jury did not think they could award a first prize. As well as not being good for the audience's enthusiasm for a competition, it also means that sponsors' interest is diminished.<\/p>\n

But now it's happening this week. The interest is overwhelming, as is the excitement, and we can all follow it, whether it's live in Koncerthuset, on P2 and dr.dk\/klassisk or live streamed directly via the website www.malkokompetition.dk<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the preliminary rounds, the repertoire includes the overtures to Mozart's The Magic Flute and The Abduction from the Seraglio, movements of Beethoven's Symphonies 7 and 9, Tchaikovsky's 6th, Mahler's 1st, a premiere of Ruders Sarabande Blues, Wagner's Lohengrin, the overtures to The Hunter's Bride by Weber, Verdi's The Power of Destiny and the 1st movement of Dvor\u00e1k's Cello Concerto and finally in the final, either the 1st movement of Brahms' Symphony No 1, 2 or 4. And for everyone: Carl Nielsen's Dance of the Rooster.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
