The 18th floor of the Novotel in Beijing was buzzing and hissing, and the slightly leaky windows provided plenty of fresh air in my room. If it had been my private hotel, I would have changed those windows, but there are an awful lot of windows in such a building, so I'm glad it's not mine!

In the morning, the city was bathed in sunshine and for the first time you could see the mountains, the Forbidden City and the endless number of grey giant buildings - mixed with the small low historical houses called hutongs, which were originally the old official residences of the emperor, who himself lived in the Forbidden City.

Everyone left the hotel at 10.15am by bus to a station where the new Chinese bullet trains are based. China is embarking on a colossal project where these super trains will connect China in a gigantic network of trains travelling over 300 km per hour. We were there in good time, no problems with traffic to the beautiful and impressive train station. All the musicians also travelled by train and the trip was completed in just over 40 minutes. The speed was fantastic, the sound level low and the comfort great.

But such a train is in a hell of a hurry, it has to move quickly and only stops briefly at each station. One of the orchestra's viola players, who plays a marvellous viola, rushed out of the train like the rest of us. But the poor girl was in too much of a hurry, so much so that she didn't have time to bring her viola with her. The dutiful production manager, Adam, did, and being the bright young man that he is, he will of course pick up a forgotten viola if he sees it.

But then the unfortunate happens - the kind of thing that only happens in films, and which often seems a little unlikely. Production manager Adam doesn't exit the same train door with the viola as the violist enters, as she panics and jumps back into the train to get her instrument - which is now gone. Before she can get back out, the doors slam shut and the train speeds off at 340 kilometres per hour towards Shanghai - without the viola, but with a very frightened musician....

A terrible experience for everyone, but luckily the mobile phone has been invented. There was a return train, and at the time of writing, the viola group is back together again - all with instruments and in good spirits.

The concert on day 2 is about to start. People are pouring into the hall - including lots of young people. They are going to hear Chinese and Danish music, and they seem to be looking forward to it. The city of Tianjin is not that big, just over 10 million inhabitants with a small conservatory that currently only has 3,600 students.

I had a good chat with their principal and the local orchestra director, my colleague. Both of them came to the concert with great interest, and they claimed to know many of the orchestra musicians from Chinese YouTube videos (though I'm not sure if that's YouTube in Chinese). Classical music is very popular here, and I'm excited to see how they'll receive Nielsen, because I know they'll get it in the most upbeat and exuberant version!

Første koncert på turneen i National Centre of Performing Arts Centers store koncertsal gik aldeles fremragende.
