At the symphony orchestra's New Year's Gala Concert on Friday afternoon, 1st Principal Janissary Gert S\u00f8rensen was presented with this year's Peter Varming Memorial Prize.<\/p>\n

Lawyer Peter Varming was the first chairman of the Friends, and he was director of the Beckett Foundation until his death in 2015. It is this foundation that awards the prize of DKK 25,000 plus a series of professional portraits that can be used in his future career.<\/p>\n

Peter Varming's widow, Anette Faaborg, former rector of the West Jutland Conservatory of Music in Esbjerg, took the stage after the break in the concert together with the Friends' current chairman, Mogens Rubinstein, and motivated the award, which is given to a musician who through his artistic work has contributed to the orchestra's development to its current high international level.<\/p>\n

- \"It's safe to say that Gert S\u00f8rensen lives up to the wording of the charter. He has been a prominent member of the orchestra for 30 years and was for a long period the dynamic representative of his colleagues to the outside world,\" said Anette Faaborg at the presentation of the award.<\/p>\n

She emphasised his commitment to the orchestra's development, opportunities and future and continued:<\/p>\n

- In addition to his orchestral work, he has been involved in countless musical collaborations with great Danish composers such as Per N\u00f8rgaard, Poul Ruders, Palle Mikkelborg, Niels Rosing-Schow and many more<\/p>\n

Gert S\u00f8rensen was a powerful inspiration when the Friends decided last year to donate a set of real church bells to the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, which have already been used at several concerts, and he attended the casting of the last bells in the series in Holland. On that occasion, he spoke about the possibilities real church bells offer compared to the modern imitations. Listen to his thoughts here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Anyone who has attended a concert where Gert S\u00f8rensen has performed, not least on the cymbals, has been able to enjoy the very special swing he takes the cymbals down after they have sounded. Or his prominent cymbals during Mahler's 8. Symphony - see below.<\/p>\n

Last year the award went to solo violist Claus Myrup and the year before to solo flautist Ulla Miilmann J\u00f8rgensen.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
