DR's Head of Repertoire and Planning Tatjana Kandel is currently working out what the Symphony Orchestra will offer audiences in 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n

An hour before the Concert Choir's rehearsal in Studio 2 in DR-Byen on Tuesday, she told members of the Friends Association about the long-term work of creating a seasonal programme. A task that she herself calls a puzzle with many building blocks. There are calendars to coordinate, an orchestra with 106 musicians, a conductor, a soloist, an audience and some works that need to be united in a higher unity.<\/p>\n

And then there is a direction and a signature for the orchestra that binds the season together. In DR's case, the main line is set by the chief conductor Fabio Luisi. He tells Tatjana Kandel which weeks he will be able to come to Denmark.<\/p>\n

The orchestra is also characterised by the sound that the Danish National Symphony Orchestra should have. Warm strings, solo winds, brilliant brass and virtuoso percussion. Each orchestra has its own identity, and there are big differences in the ideal image around the world.<\/p>\n

At an early stage, a place needs to be found in the desired conductor's calendar. And many of the great conductors may have specific composers they are concentrating on in a given year. Many of them also have specific ideas about which soloists they would like to take the podium with.<\/p>\n

Tatjana Kandel already knows that legendary conductor Herbert Blomstedt, who often conducts the orchestra he himself was chief conductor of many years ago, will arrive in May 2027, shortly before his 100th birthday.<\/p>\n

Conductors, and Blomstedt is no exception, have their own very clear ideas about where each musician should sit in the hall. The famous Swede simply won't start rehearsals if the musicians are sitting \u201dwrong\u201d, explaining that in a march, for example, the sound should come directly from the instruments to the audience in a straight line and not sound as if the music suddenly bends and turns round.<\/p>\n

The most frequently performed works were written in the 19th and 20th centuries by composers such as Carl Nielsen, Strauss, Mahler and Shostakovich, but DR also has a responsibility to future-proof new music, some of which is directly commissioned from international and Danish composers. Even if the newer music doesn't get the audience to buy tickets to the same extent as the older repertoire.<\/p>\n

The interaction between conductor, soloist and orchestra usually follows a rhythm where conductors come to DR-Byen on Mondays, soloists on Wednesdays and concerts take place on Thursdays, often with a repeat on Friday or Saturday.<\/p>\n

In Tatjana Kandel's job, the worst-case scenario is that a conductor or soloist cancels at short notice. This happened recently when an agent called to complain that his conductor had cancelled.
