We're on day 6 of the tour, working hard every night on stage, driving many hours on the bus in endless traffic jams on motorways with 5, 6 and 7 lanes on each side. Damn, there are a lot of cars in this country.<\/p>\n

Musicians, conductor and crew have got into the touring groove surprisingly quickly. New hotels and new concert halls every day have suddenly become commonplace. Jet lag affects different people differently, some of us slip quickly into the new division of light and dark for others it takes a long time to get used to, common to all are strange waking periods in the middle of the night and then those harsh black outs where fatigue overtakes you like a club.<\/p>\n

Most people know it from holidays, but for a musician who has to perform at their best every night at 8pm, it can be a real challenge, with no time for a nap when playing through.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

From the concert in Palm Dessert, an artificial green oasis in the middle of the desert, we move on to the metropolis of San Diego. In San Diego, the orchestra plays in the local orchestra hall. A fine hall with a peculiar history. The hall is an old cinema inaugurated in the year of the great stock market crash, 1929.<\/p>\n

Located on an attractive site in the centre of the city, in 1989 the orchestra sold the site including the concert hall to a developer with plans for a skyscraper.<\/p>\n

The sale was completed on the condition that whatever building and however many storeys were built on the site, the new building would contain the old hall - untouched.<\/p>\n

The result is a touching, borderline bizarre mix of a modern skyscraper and an original untouched cinema hall from the last century.<\/p>\n

As a guest, you enter through the revolving doors of the skyscraper, with glass, steel and lifts. You turn a corner, enter through a small portal and just like that you're in a cinema from 1929. The huge cinema organ - I've never seen anything like it - is still there. The pulpit can still be hoisted up from the floor, the room's decoration is original with ornaments and curlicues, like a pocket of time from a bygone era wrapped in a 30-storey high modern skyscraper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The acoustics are fine, there is just enough room for the whole orchestra and the audience is engaged. There are a lot of young people, they are well prepared, they have been looking forward to meeting the Nordic orchestra and their Italian maestro.<\/p>\n

And Luisi knows his orchestra better and better, he knows very well that in the middle of a tour, extra energy must be sent into the concert. He doesn't spare himself, especially Mahler's 1st gets a start that the DR Symphony Orchestra seizes immediately. Forgotten are jet lag, 12-lane motorways and lugging heavy suitcases and instruments, music trumps all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mahler is really starting to come together now, the solo wind players are playing formidably with expression and phrasing, Luisi is playing along, letting them take their own initiatives, seizing them and shaping them, never out of control, but with greater and greater courage and desire to give the music the life, intensity and energy that music needs to make sense and move and move its audience.<\/p>\n

Music is play on a deeply serious background, a kind of tightrope walk way up under the circus roof or a desire to go all the way to the edge of the abyss. The closer you are to the abyss, the more you feel the pull in your stomach, the more energy and adrenaline you get. When an orchestra and a conductor both play against this backdrop, the result is the kind of music that leaves a strong impression on those of us who get to listen.<\/p>\n

The audience is extremely enthusiastic, with only about 3\/4ths of the tickets sold. You don't notice this as the applause roars and Luisi is brought in again and again.<\/p>\n

The encore by Jakob Gade could not be more well-placed than in this old cinema hall. Jakob Gade used to sit in the Copenhagen cinemas and play for silent films, he would have loved to entertain the audience here in San Diego. Many locals pull me aside, wanting to know more about this insanely famous tango that everyone I talk to thinks was written by a South American. I politely explain to them the story of Gade, but I can inform them that no one over here has yet learnt to say GADE with the soft D, Luisi practices daily and is probably the closest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rehearsals for the new programmes for San Francisco start today, and it's time to get down to business with Nielsen's 6th and Beethoven's Eroica. Many musicians sit in the bus with iPhones and sheet music and prepare, rehearsing in their rooms, Nielsen's 6th will be played in the hall where Herbert Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra set new Nielsen standards years ago.<\/p>\n

Now comes the orchestra that has Nielsen as their DNA. Everyone knows how difficult this symphony is, we've heard they can't wait to hear us in San Francisco - we don't want to disappoint them, so we have to practise and practise.<\/p>\n

For this, a new hall must be conquered here in Costa Mesa tonight.<\/p>\n
